..........Hello, everyone. Thank you very much for taking the time to attend despite your busy schedules. The Seoul exhibition curated by Italian curator Stefania Carrozzini is finally set to open its third installment. In 2022, there were 10 participants from 7 countries; in 2024, there were 15 participants from 8 countries; and by 2026, the number had finally reached 21 participants from 10 countries. This year, in addition to being officially under the high patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul, the event has been given the title “Micro Biennial of Seoul”?a description that sounds grand but somehow also cute. Ms. Stefania Carrozzini was born in Milan and has worked as an artist, art critic, journalist, artist coach, and independent curator.
..........It is said that from 1993 to 2007, she worked as a journalist for a periodical on visual culture in New York. It is said that she also collaborated for several years with Pierre Restany, a renowned international critic and the founder of the “Nouveau Realisme” art movement. It is said that from 1996 to 2008, she worked as a director on projects related to international exhibitions. From 2003 to 2007, she also worked for the CVB Gallery in New York. She is said to have organized and curated various exhibitions in Italy, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Finland, the United States, Canada, China, and Germany, among other countries. She also published three books in 2005, 2009, and 2024 that compiled her exhibition achievements.
..........She also opened a gallery called “MyMicro” in Milan in 2013 and has been running it for 14 years. My connection with Ms. Stefania Carrozzini began in the fall of 2020, when I received an email inviting me to participate in a themed exhibition titled “Respiro-Breath,” featuring 14 artists from seven countries, which was to be held consecutively at the Galleria Sant Eufemia in Venice, Italy; the MyMicro Gallery in Milan; and the Camden Image Gallery in London, England. The “Breath” themed exhibition was an exhibition curated by Stefania Carrozzini against the backdrop of the COVID-17 pandemic. She said she stumbled upon my website while browsing the internet. Among the 21 artists here today, there are some who flew all the way here from across the ocean. Let me introduce them. Annamaria Cimbal from Italy. Anya Pesce from Australia. Yuko Shinozaki from Japan. Stefania Carrozzini from Italy.

..........Good evening everyone, and thank you for being here today. I am very happy to be back in Seoul. This is the third time I have presented an exhibition in this beautiful space with Soo Hyun Park, following our previous collaborations in 2022 and 2024. First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul for its High Patronage and for supporting this project. For an international project based on dialogue and exchange between different cultures, this recognition is particularly meaningful to me. I would also especially like to thank Soo Hyun because, from the very beginning, she understood something that is fundamental to me: the importance of creating a dialogue between artists from different countries, cultures, and continents. I deeply believe that art cannot exist in isolation.
..........Art needs encounters, exchange, and different ways of seeing the world. For me, working internationally is not simply about bringing an exhibition from one city to another. It is about creating connections between people, experiences, and visions. This idea is also at the heart of the Micro Biennial. Gravity & Levity: A Cosmic Dance was presented in New York and Milan earlier this year, and today it arrives in Seoul in the form of a Micro Biennial. Why Gravity & Levity? Because I believe art reflects its time, but also tries to go beyond what is immediately visible. We live between opposite forces: gravity and lightness, matter and immateriality, stability and movement, what we can control and what escapes our control. This is the “cosmic dance” I am interested in: opposite forces that do not exclude each other, but coexist and create movement. For me, art is first of all research. In this sense, the artist is not so different from the scientist.
..........The artist observes, experiments, questions, makes mistakes, discovers, and dedicates time to personal research. But artistic research is deeply rooted in experience. Every artist brings into the work a personal history, memory, sensitivity, and a unique way of perceiving the world. And I believe this will become increasingly important in the future. We are entering a world in which artificial intelligence will become more and more present and increasingly capable of generating images, texts, and forms. Perhaps, precisely because of this, human experience will become even more valuable. The more technology is able to generate and reproduce, the more precious our lived experience will become: our memory, intuition, doubt, vulnerability, relationships, and our unique way of being in the world. What is human will become increasingly precious. And perhaps Gravity & Levity can also be understood in this way.
..........The dance between gravity and lightness is also the dance of being human. We are gravity: body, matter, weight, limits. But we are also lightness: thought, imagination, intuition, desire, and the possibility of going beyond what we see. Art exists somewhere between these two dimensions. So, at a time when we are constantly asking what machines will be able to do, perhaps art can help us ask a different and more essential question: What does it mean to be human? This question is also connected to the idea of the Micro Biennial. “Micro” does not refer to the size of the artworks or to the importance of the project. It refers to its structure: a smaller, more flexible and independent format, closer to a human scale. We live in a time of excess? too many images, too much information, too many stimuli.
..........Perhaps we need to rediscover the value of stopping, looking, and giving time to an artwork. Less is more. The Micro Biennial is not intended to compete with traditional biennials. It is an experiment, a way of questioning the exhibition format itself and imagining another possibility. And this is where I see the future of the project. For me, Seoul is not the end of this journey. It is another beginning. I would like the Micro Biennial to continue travelling and transforming itself through the places and people it encounters. I imagine a geography of small points connected across the world: New York, Milan, Seoul, and, in the future, other cities and other continents. Different artists, different cultures, different experiences, but always creating dialogue. I would like the artists not simply to exhibit together, but to meet, exchange ideas, and perhaps create new collaborations.
..........Because despite all the possibilities offered by technology, I believe we still need real encounters. We need experience. We need the presence of others. And art can create this space. I do not know exactly where this project will take us, and I think this uncertainty is important. Every real research needs a space for the unexpected. But I know the direction I want to follow: to continue creating connections between artists, cultures, and continents, and to create small spaces of freedom where we can stop, look, think, listen, and encounter one another. Perhaps in an increasingly technological future, what will become most precious is precisely what cannot be replaced: our experience, our individuality, our ability to feel, our ability to connect, our humanity.
..........For me, this is the true dance between gravity and lightness. It is the dance of being human. I would like to thank once again the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul, Soo Hyun Park for sharing this vision with me, and all the artists who have taken part in Gravity & Levity: A Cosmic Dance. And I thank all of you for being here today and becoming part of this ongoing research.
